Wartburg is from the GDR (DDR). It stems from car making since 1899. They first made cars called Wartburg, from 1904 onwards they were called Dixi. This factory was bought by non other then BMW. In fact the first car BMW made was a Dixi with another badge. After the 2nd World War the factory was in the Eastern zone (Soviet zone) and they first kept making cars branded BMW. After a lawsuit inthe 1950s they renamed their cars from 1952 EMW (Eisenacher Motoren Werke) and from 1955 a new car called Wartburg started production.

They were imported into the Netherlands by Gremi, if my memory serves me well.

Saw these at the Essen motorshow. Put them on my long shortlist
They are the first sealed diecast cars I know of and if you ask me it's a good thing. The're cheaper to produce and you don't get only an openable front door and the cheap look of that...

yap, over the years I learned to live with the fact that I don´t have to open things.

Sure its great to see the engine of a Countach or Miura but I could also
use google to see engines

Oh and I try to deliver MAC-Pics today.
